Special advice

Darker evenings

Now that the darker evenings are upon us there is a strong likelihood that burglaries could increase due to homes being left unoccupied and in darkness. Now that the clocks have gone back, people can be arriving home from work to a house in darkness. The purpose of this message is not to cause alarm, but to advise householders to take sensible precautions.

In particular:

  • Maintain security of the premises by ensuring access to the rear of the property is secured via a locked gate and sound boundaries
  • When leaving the property empty keep all windows and exterior doors locked at all times
  • Garages and sheds should be locked with tools chained and padlocked together inside, with the chain secured to the fabric of this outbuilding
  • Use a shed alarm as an extra way of securing sheds and garages
  • Ensure security lighting is sited in such a way that it is tamperproof
  • Use timer switches to ensure that your house is lit if it is unoccupied in the late afternoon or early evening
  • Make a note of and report registration numbers and descriptions of any unfamiliar vehicles which appear suspicious
  • Note any persons making cold calls at your home; descriptions of the individuals, their clothing and the reasons they give for calling.

Regards
