16 Dec 2000 Flooding hits Barton Stacey
The road between the village centre and Cocum Farm was flooded in two places and the council has put up flood warning signs at each. The flooding is worst at the junction of the main road and the southern end of Gravel Lane. The flood water comes from the springs which have risen on Cocum Farm, draining across the road, and running into the gulleys which seem unable to disperse the flow. Properties in the area are under threat of flood and residents have laid in supplies of sandbags. The effect of the flooding is made worse by careless motorists who drive through the water - now more than a foot deep - at speed and cause waves to splash over nearby properties. The effect is also felt by the emergency services as ambulance drivers are worried about getting through the water. The police have investigated the situation and at one stage it was suspected that raw sewage was polluting the area although checks by Southern Water proved inconclusive. Additional sandbags can be obtained from the Test Valley Borough Council depot on 01264 357321.
