The suit worn is called a judogi and there are rules as to how it may be worn.
The room in which judo is practiced is called the dojo.
The instructor is referred to at all times as sensei.
Students (judoka) learn that discipline is the key to the sport and always observe the strict etiquette of judo . They must always bow or rei when they enter the dojo and before the step onto or leave the mat.
There are many other rules and regulations which are to be found in numerous books on the subject.
New students to judo wear a white belt and proceed through to the dan grades by the grading system. These are achieved by learning judo techniques such as throws, hold-downs, arm locks, strangles, chokes (all using the Japanese terminology). The coloured belt signifies the grade that the judoka is wearing i.e. white, yellow, o range, green, blue, purple, brown, black and then the Dan grades.
