Jigoro Kano | ![]() |
Judo comes from Japan, JU meaning flexible or supple and DO meaning way It was developed by Jigoro Kano who originally practiced Ju Jitsu and decided to make a sport out of what was purely a way of fighting without weapons. He founded his first club in 1882 and today millions of people of all ages practice judo.
Because of its origins certain customs come with the sport. The international language of judo is Japanese. All throws, holds and referees terms are in Japanese and students learn this as part of the sport.
